The dilemma

Kedar hated those hot and humid summer noons. He also hated the idea of such short noticed conferences in the office. They named it a conference, but in reality the bosses would take a review of their doings, tell them whatever they have done is not enough. He had received the e-mail for the conference the previous morning, which in turn ruined his whole day. There was only one train in the late evening that could take you through these four hundred miles to reach Kolkata in the morning. Kedar had no other option than to board that train. Boarding that train without a ticket and then managing the TTE for a place to sleep had become  regular for him, courtesy to such frequent short noticed conferences.

The train reached Kolkata around ten thirty, late by almost three hours. Like his habit of not buying a ticket from the ticket window, being late by two to three hours had also become more regular for the overnight mail. His office guest house was two miles away from the office, his destination for the day. Taking the shower at the guest house had relieved him greatly, the night was really a tiresome one. When you have to travel sitting on the crowded sleeper coach in a humid June night, you have got to be tired. Now he was on the road again.

The main road was a few blocks away. With the Sun showing all its wrath, there was not much life on the streets. Even the stray dogs were taking a nap in the shadows. Living had become harsher. Kedar waited more than ten minutes  for a passing by cab, unfortunately, there is none to be seen. There would be cabs on the main road, but he was not in a condition  to walk a kilometer to reach there. Already running late, he finally decided to walk a few yards, round the corner he might get something. He knew that an empty cab would be a luxury, so even a shared auto rickshaw would help him. He saw few autos passing this locality last year, but never bothered to find where they were going.

Kedar walked through the narrow Kolkata lanes, crossed a few turnings.Nothing was there to commute yet. The hit was killing him. He was holding the few papers that he had with him above his head to get a shade and decided, anything commutable coming through those lanes next, be it a private car, he would ask for a lift. But that noon was a miserable one. He stopped under a tree for few moments at a crossroad, eying the four narrow lanes for traffic.

Basudeb was also eying for commuters at the crossroad. He was sitting on the pedestal of his hackneyed hand pulled rickshaw, waiting for a long time now. He dropped the three children from Banerjee babu’s house to their school at eight in the morning. That was one of the few monthly arrangements that he had. He had another two regulars in the afternoon. At least those confirmed that he would have a fixed pay around a thousand rupees at the end of the month. That was a very measurable day for Basudeb, as he had only four trips from the crossroad to the main road earning him mere twenty rupees.

In fact, it had been a tough time for people with the hand pulling rickshaw for many years now. People had become more and more educated, society had become cosmopolitan and the thought of one old man pulling the weight of another man with his luggage ( sometimes two to three times of his weight) had become inhumane to many. People normally tend to use the rickshaws in the crowded markets when they had to carry huge baggage , or when the narrow lanes of Kolkata are waterlogged during rainy season and someone had to reach the bus stand without getting wet . Basudeb and his fellow rickshaw pullers had fat income those days. But that was not one of such days. Basudeb had never had enough income. For many days now, he had been thinking of changing his area to the marketplace, but that required bribing the new union leader with a thousand rupees at least. A thousand rupees was hard to come by those days to a man like him.

Kedar also didn’t like to be an inhumane fellow. He had noticed the gray-haired rickshaw puller, waiting for a passenger. His eager eyes were looking straight to Kedar in hope.It was too hot, too humid, Kedar definitely would love a ride. How far it would be to the main road, six fifty to seven hundred meters. A ride for ten minutes for ten rupees would not be so inhumane.

When he came close to the rickshaw, Basudeb got up on his feet. Kedar was about to ride the rickshaw when he noticed Basudeb’s bare feet. He stopped and looked on to the road, the asphalt was melting.

The road was black and so were the rickshaw puller’s feet.

To sell a tune

The oval shaped joggers’ park has always got a rush hour. People normally start coming when the Sun is somewhere behind the mangroves, daylight is still there and the pavement bulbs are no lit yet. As the sunlight keeps dying, the flow of people keeps growing. This rush stays for at least two hours, people of all ages come and form the crowd that sweat its way to be healthy. The last few weeks I also have been trying to be there during the rush hour and be a part of the sweating crowd.

There are many kinds of people that come to the park. It will take only a few days for you to observe and identify different types. There is a group of middle aged ladies, at the wrong side of forty .They come daily, act like they are here to lose some calories, but in reality what they do is to discuss topics that all other middle aged women discuss when they meet; the only exception being that they take a lazy stroll while they talk. There are a few whom you see only once or twice, they come in all kinds of dresses. Some of this one timers come in jeans, some girls come as if they are almost ready for a photo shoot ( with make-up and hair dressing already done , if you ask them they will be ready in jiffy; perhaps they come with a hope to meet some celebrity by chance). There is the bodybuilders group, who come in their oversized vests showing the cuts and biceps they possess. I have never seen them running, some of them hang on to the parallel iron bars and others keep advising them. Another type even comes in formals; I wonder why they come at all.

Then there is one kind which is serious. They come regularly, they stretch lot longer than the others and when they finish stretching they run. They sweat, they humph but never stop running early. If you are regular, you can recognise them by faces. There is one curly haired girl who always comes with the same pouch – her hair neatly tied with a new multi-coloured scarf every time. There is short guy who does not look like a runner at all; rather to me he looks like a delivery boy of any one of the many delicious restaurants from the nearby market. There is one bald, strong man who wears a solid golden chain, who keeps babbling to himself while he runs.
This serious lot always come with a full package, sports tee shirts, light weight running shoes and a mobile or some other music device like a ipod, either strapped to their arm or kept in their pocket. All of their ears are plugged in with music that help them to set up a nice rhythm or to sing inspiration to their ears to keep going for that extra mile. When I see them, I always wish if I would have been like them, so fit and so lean they all are. I also started to visit the park, sometimes twice, sometimes thrice a week. I can’t be like them but at least I got my ears plugged in with those kinds of music. This gives such an impression to any passer-by that they will definitely take to be a part of the serious lot.  Thus I started running; however the fact is that I run less and stroll more, observing and identifying the types of people that visit the park.

The last time I visited the park, I forgot my earphone. I had my mobile, but it’s of no use during the rush hour. I felt odd, thought I should return home and get that earphone, but other part of me (the lazy part) biased my decision. I stretched a little, and then I started strolling, surrounded by all decibels coming from the street, from the mangrove beside the park and from the crowd of the rush hour. The oval shaped park has a shade in the middle, with a few benches to sit when you are tired, to stretch when you are fresh.

When I approached the shade that day, I heard someone playing a very melodic tune on the flute. An old melody which I heard so many times, but somehow I could not remember the song. Anyway, I strolled towards the shade looking around for the source of the tune. Just opposite to the park, across the road, there are a few tall luxury apartments. Upon the gate of one such apartment, there was a flute-man. With around hundred flutes of different sizes and scales stuck on a bamboo pole, he was the one playing the tune .Without my earphone to sing me a song; I liked the sound of the flute very much. Keeping my stroll ahead, I thought lets quicken up a bit, the faster I comeback near the shade, I earlier I would listen to the flute-seller. I sped up a little, converting the stroll into a jog only to listen to the flute sooner. On my next approach to the shade, he was still playing the same tune.

I wondered looking at the apartments, would any kid from these buildings buy a flute! I took another lap, approached the shade again, this time the flute-man was moving. He had just finished his earlier song, played a brief random piece. That didn't sound familiar. I crossed him, crossed the shade, he began to play same earlier tune again. He was moving away slowly, perhaps he realized that it’s not the proper sale point for him. My light jog converted to a run to come back to the tune which was fading away in a distance faster. I completed another lap, sweating on my way; I could hear the same tune becoming louder with each of my step over the running pavement. He had stopped at the end of the park, trying to lure the commuters to buy a flute. I thought it would be nice if he plays a different tune now. Trying to attract people with the same banner would definitely not help him with the sale. I decided to go for another round, to see whether he plays another or not. Deliberately my feet were moving slow, to give the flute-man time to finish his tune and pick up another. This time when I got back the end of park, there was no tune, the flute-man was nowhere to be seen.

Tired by now and sweating, the lazy me woke up again. I called it a day, stretched back a little bit, like all the serious type does. When I got out from there, I remembered I had to withdraw money from the ATM. The nearest working ATM was a bit far, towards the other end of the market. I walked to towards the ATM, slowly getting my breath back. I wondered what song the flute-man would have played next. Did he know a song for each mood, could he play a happy song if I request, could he play a lullaby, my train of thought was not leaving the flute-man real soon! After withdrawing the money when I was about to return, then again I heard the same tune. This time it was near the Coffee shop. I couldn't resist myself from heading towards the Coffee shop. I met him, an old man with dark screen but clean clothes. My approach brought a smile to his face, probably the thought of a prospective customer. He said," Take any one Saab, small ones are for fifty a piece, the larger one for eighty. All scales are available, for cinema songs, for bhajans, all are there." I never had any skill for such things; neither was I there to buy a flute. I was there to find out and advise him, why he played the same tune. I asked him," Bhaiya, why do you play the same song, if you want to attract people, you have to play other tunes also. I have been listening to you for last one hour; you played the same over and over again".

He said," Saab, I have an old wife waiting for me to bring food tonight. I have not sold a single flute in two days. This is the only tune that I can play. If to sell a flute I have to play the same tune whole day long, I will do that. I will do that till my breath holds. I can't beg to feed my wife." He started walk playing the brief random piece towards the market, probably in the search of his lone buyer of the day.

From the coffee shop, I watched him lost in the crowd. Only his long bamboo pole with hundred flutes was visible over the countless black heads and the same tune was spread on the air. I thought, perhaps I played the flute.

What are girls good for !

I have the habit of spending much of my free time on the internet. This doesn't mean only "free" time, this also include time which I could have used for other activities. Anyways, that's not the point. The major share of the time I spend on the internet is watching videos on YouTube. They are going so smart day by day, if you have logged into YouTube and search something, they will suggest you similar videos next time. So as a part of this suggestion scheme by YouTube, I have watched many music videos, sports videos and many more.
One such video which particularly impressed me was of one "Mamady Keita”, a master Percussion music player from a small village from the African country of Guinea, near the borders of Mali. Form the age of seven, Mamady has been playing and encouraging people around the world to play a special goblet shaped percussion instrument known as the Djembe. Djembe is so popular now a days that you will not find a single percussionist on the stage without a Djembe .This video that I watched was a part of talk show from Dublin Bing Bang Festival 2009, a festival which brings the best of percussive performances, workshops, master classes, dances around the globe on a single platform. So, as a part of this talk show in which Mamady participated, somebody asked him about the origin of the very instrument that he plays, the Djembe. Mamady , a master drummer, a historian of music of his ethnic group name Malinke , was very good in answering such kind of questions. But what amused me more was the question that he asked as a reply of the question he was asked for. When somebody asks us about the origin of drumming music or rhythmic music, we always picture the same old image of some native masked tribal people gathering around a fireplace, some people dancing and some playing a drum; which is a part of either praying to their god, or making some sacrifices. Hollywood movies helped us greatly in forming that image in the back of our head. But when asked about the origin of this particular instrument, Mamady had something else in his mind. He said, before the instrument was born there was rhythm of popular kind which was born. These rhythms were not that sacrifice making or praying type of rhythm, but these were the rhythm of some common and popular rhythm played at the celebrations of the common mass gathering. So, there were the situations for celebration like marriage, baptism, the ceremony fishing day in the sacred lakes, ceremony of the first harvesting of cultivation, welcoming of visitors etc. Along with these celebrations were born the songs of popular kind and to keep the rhythm to these celebratory songs, there came the clapping. Hundreds of years before the Djembe were born, there were these three ancestors born - the situation for celebration, the songs for celebration and the clapping rhythm. And the astonishing fact among these all is that, it was the women of the society who invented all these. Later the blacksmith of that region of Western Africa came up with the idea of creating and instrument to keep the rhythm and they developed the Goblet shaped wooden instrument, tied with animal skin and rope, which today is known as the Djembe. The very idea of Djembe also originated from the women itself. African women used to crush or ground their food ingredients like seeds and all in a cup shaped wooden receptacle known as mortar. Two women would keep crushing the ingredients with a six seven feet long wooden club, they would keep singing in a rhythm played the club. These crushing in a rhythm invented the idea of Djembe.
Mamady Keita finished the answer with a simple question, if everything originates from women, and then why don't have enough woman percussion players? Though the whole story is from African society, but our society also has the same puzzle unsolved. If a woman says she is into music, back of our head pictures her as a singer by default. We should change our mind-set about that. Women are more powerful, not today but since ages. India particularly is not so rich in female percussionists. There are a few who has marked excellence like Anuradha Pal, but we need more. We have a few all girls band in India, but solo female percussionists are rare. Rhythm is inborn to women; they should be encouraged more and more into the world of percussion music. Hopefully someday we will have female percussionist in India who plays at par with Shivamani, Taufiq Quershi etc or may be better.
